Portrait

Steering wheel instead of mouse, lap times instead of points, and the graphics turned all the way up please. You want to experience races as if you were there: rain on the windscreen, reflections in the paint, the engine sound in your stomach.

That is why you like to tinker. Downforce, tyre pressure, frame rate, field of view, everything gets adjusted until it feels right. And once it feels right, you adjust it once more.

You are happiest alone on the track. Against the clock, against your own ghost from the last lap.

Strengths

  • You have patience for fine-tuning that bores others.
  • You notice when something feels wrong and find out why.
  • You can really enjoy experiences instead of just ticking them off.

Pitfalls

  • Racing sims make accessories incredibly tempting. And expensive.
  • A tenth of a second can keep you busy for a whole evening.
  • Maximum graphics and maximum frame rate at the same time cost more than you would think.

The right setup

Monitor
WQHD or 4K, ideally wide or curved. For racing games a large field of view is worth more than extremely high refresh rates.
Graphics card
Upper mid-range or more with 16 GB of video memory. High resolution, reflections and weather really cost performance.
Processor
A strong processor for driving physics and lots of opponents on the track.
Memory and storage
32 GB of RAM, especially for simulations and the flight simulator.
Accessories
Wheel with pedals, maybe a racing seat later. Measure the space in your room first.
Software
Your wheel's software, telemetry programs to analyse your laps and a frame rate cap for even frames.
